Thrilling fixture between Everton and Liverpool
provided great entertainment as always, but I’m bit disappointed because of
bizarre decision made by the referee after VAR review of late goal scored by
Henderson, which has been disallowed. Officials have seen offside, but even
after many replays, I just cannot see nothing wrong, like journalists. Question
mark over VAR under current regulation is not something Premier League needs
right now.
However, Everton played like the champions, they are leading English Premier League right now and it is well deserved leadership. Ancelotti have established team, which is capable of winning every single time and push Liverpool and others to absolute limit. The only one weakness, I can see, is goalkeeper, Pickford, bit insecure almost every time he plays. He seems to be under pressure, but the rest of the team is absolutely brilliant. They play with desire to win and they are disciplined in terms of tactic. The work ethic is in this team. They defend aggressively, closing down opponents quickly, not letting to many attempt on their goal to be made. Carlo Ancelotti pays a lot of attention to tactics and rightly so. It leads to great results.
Liverpool made difference due to Salah and Mane, but they have lost for eight months their best defender, Virgil Van Dijk, because of the injury after the challenge in the Everton box. They didn’t win the match, but without Van Dijk, it would be incredibly difficult to win Premier League. It is harsh, but I have to say, Matip and Gomez are not good enough to stop many teams this season. Van Dijk is great in terms of set pieces in defense and in offense, scoring goals for Liverpool over the years now. They will be struggling without him. The calendar is congested and they need to find replacement on the market during next transfer window. Otherwise, they will be in trouble. On the other hand, they were competitive during first part of last season, despite they lost Alisson Becker in opener against Norwich.
City are on the front foot again, despite poor start of the current season. They won against well disciplined Arsenal team. City and Arsenal are under management of Spaniards, Guardiola and Arteta, who want their teams to play passing and high quality football, but the most important thing is defense for them. It was clearly seen during last fixture between those teams last weekend. It is not surprising, they will not play like Tottenham and West Ham, tactic plays crucial role and it is determining factor, but I have to say, Manchester City are not as good as they were when David Silva played for them in last ten years. They need play maker. Phil Foden is gaining experience, but it will take time to make progress. He needs to rely on his teammates. The key City player is Kevin de Bruyne and he is the leader of Guardiola team. I think Arsenal made progress and they are on the right path to return to top two and fight for the title. Arteta changed the mentality of Arsenal. They are not any longer in scarcity, they are on the front foot, trying to create chances and win.
Premier League delivers!
