I would like to pay tribute to Anthoine Hubert.
F1 is inredible sport, business, global platform and community. Many people think F1 and F2 and also other series are simply great businesses and rich kids race for fun. They are wrong.
Motorsport is team sport, which enables road cars to be safer, energy efficient, greener and technologically advanced, which is proven by the history of Le Mans race and also F1 with hybrid engines. Manufacturers use Daytona 24 hours and Le Mans to build their brands, sell road cars and improve safety, for example tyres.
Sadly, one of the F2 driver, Anthoine Hubert lost his life one year ago at Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium due to terrible crash. The motorsport is one of the greatest sport, but from time to time drivers and fans lose their lives during the race weekend or rally.
His friends, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon and others will race this Sunday in F1 Belgian GP. They will race for him. It is incredible that this sport and tragedy bring people together and they race for friend, who is not longer with us.
Anthoine was French star, racing in F2, which is the F1 feeder series. Talented and skillful young man lost his life, while he was doing, what he loved. It is bitterly ironic. He would have raced in F1 currently, if he hadn't lost his life in crash and even more importantly he would enjoy his life with his family and friends.
I have seen the footage from the accident only once, it is terrible and it looks like plane crash, not car accident.
Anthoine Hubert, like Jules Bianchi, Ayrton Senna lost his life in race, however I’m convinced this tragedy would lead to further improvement of the safety, which is the paramount factor considering motorsport and it facilitates progress of the entire car industry and safety. It may sound ridiculous, because nobody would bring back Anthoine to his family…
I’m F1, WRC, WEC, DTM, BTCC and IMSA fan since late 1990s. I admire the passion and dedication of people, who create this truly exceptional competition. I’m aware it is risky, however it is fascinating every single time you watch race in TV or you are on the track at grandstands, which is completely different experience.
I learnt drivers, teams are heroes and fans could not take any race for granted. We should always remember that people risk their lives to create wonderful spectacle.
