Lewis Hamilton made a strong statement last Sunday wearing a T-shirt highlighting police brutality in America. Very reminiscent to Lebron James message in NBA. F1 champion is however under investigation right now, F1 authorities check whether Lewis broke the rules considering the sporting code.
Andrew Benson, BBC Sport: The sporting code forbids drivers from “affixing to their automobiles advertising that is political or religious in nature or that is prejudicial to the interests of the FIA”. The only reference to politics in the statues a requirement on the FIA to “refrain from manifesting discrimination on account on race, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic or social origin, language, religion, philosophical or political opinion, family situation or disability in the course of its activities”.
F1 has set up the social campaign raising awareness on social issues, like #BlackLivesMatter, #WeRaceAsOne and diversity. Lewis plays the leading role, he speaks as the leader. However, I cannot help thinking this campaign wasn’t proactive and it doesn’t deliver clear message. It’s not strong enough in my opinion. On the other hand, Lewis could not say he is treated worse because of skin colour.
Now, it is a different story.
He is under investigation by the FIA and his fans post antiracist tweets on Twitter with hashtag “IstandwithLewisHamilton”. The message is clear. Antiracist campaign is alive, not passive, but proactive. It is a living thing. Lewis triggers emotions and he is the effective leader.
I think all lives matter, not only black lives matter, “we race as one” doesn’t promote diversity – it looks like political slogan, but Lewis has taken the lead not only on the track, but off the track as well. Whether, he is right role model, it remains to be seen. I think 2016 champion, Nico Rosberg is the best:
