Honda will not be any longer in F1 after 2021 season. It is the breaking news for all F1 fans, whether they support Japanese manufacturer and teams or not, because it has massive impact on the entire F1 and the future of the sport. Incoming CEO of the F1, Stefano Domenicali will face challenges in years to come to make F1 more competitive under pandemic, economic meltdown we are seeing in F1 and expensive hybrid technology introduced to the F1 back in 2014.
Due to pandemic, the F1 needs to operate in completely different environment than in 2019. Global brands and manufacturers like Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda made massive investments over the years to make the hybrid power units introduced to F1, and even more importantly, developed – it is a massive research and development business, in favor of the biggest engine manufacturers, like Mercedes, Ferrari (Fiat-Chrysler was the parent company until 2016), Honda and Renault. The engine regulations had not been changed even others manufacturers like Volkswagen and Porsche would have wanted to join the F1, which is the global platform. I was impressed to what extent the late Sergio Marchionne had improved the entire Fiat-Chrysler group and F1 team, Scuderia Ferrari (both Fiat and Ferrari were split back in 2016, however Marchionne was the CEO until his death in 2018) giving them all needed equipment to win in the F1.
Currently, we have however Merc on the top, they are simply dominant, the opposition is not good enough, Merc are in the league of their own, opponents need years to challenge them for the title.
Pandemic delayed aerodynamic regulation changes to be implemented in 2022 and ironically, it led to reduce of the money which are spent on the development. The cost cap is the good thing. Teams will be rewarded fairer than ever before. Profits will be shared to mid-pack teams, enabling them to make progress over the Winter to catch the biggest teams.
Since the introduction of complex 1.6 litre V6 engines with kinetic and heat energy recovery systems back in 2014, the F1 became the race of the engineers more than ever before. It was always research and development formula, but it took another level in 2014. F1 is the engine dependent racing series. Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda have all under control and it kills the F1. Teams, which are not able to manufacture their own engines, like McLaren and Red Bull are suffering and they are on the back foot, dependent on others.
However, Honda-Red Bull partnership seemed to be the perfect fit to the entire F1. Red Bull are the winning group of people, they have the best driver, Max Verstpapen, racing designer, Adrian Newey, experience and expertise, and also developed and competitive power unit, Honda. They could challenge mighty Mercedes for the title, but it wasn’t meant to be. Honda leaves the F1. Red Bull will probably need to buy Renault power units to survive – the dependence on the complex power unit extends the gap between Mercedes and the rest of the pack.
I believe Stefano Domenicali will get the job done however. Domenicali was Ferrari team principal, the member of the Ferrari over the years. He is experienced considering the business model of such a global platform as the F1 and taking into account the sport itself, he is aware the strong leadership is the key to make this transition period under pandemic, economic woes, aero regulations changes and simplification of the engines regulations smooth.
It is high time to make decisions and make F1 better. Honda’s departure is the opportunity to move forward, not be stuck to basically two-three engines suppliers and engineers race. F1 should be drivers race, not people behind the scenes.
F1 should be the platform for customer teams, like Scuderia AlphaTauri and drivers like Pierre Gasly, not only one team on the grid.
The balance of the power needs to shifted towards smaller teams. The business model needs to be changed, one manufacturer cannot run the entire racing series.
